Competitive Moots
The legal profession is in danger without good advocacy and drafting skills. As lawyers, words are the tools of our trade. These tools could be in the form of speaking and writing. Thus, it is imperative, as a condition precedent for a successful legal career for those in the business of law to be above board on their command of language – both oral and written. As a way of fostering these skills, we are committed to an annual organization of competitive moot court competitions. We draw participants from students at faculties of law of interested universities. The competitions are in stages – nationally, regionally, and globally with great prizes for the winners.
As part of our efforts at deepening the knowledge of law and advocacy skills in law students, we organize two separate moot court competitions. One is global in approach and focuses on international law. The other is a national moot competition focusing on any area of law as decided by the organizers.
The global international law moot competition (the “International Law Moot”) has the simulation of the International Court of Justice. The hypothetical cases for the International Law Moot are based on disputes between States. The International Law Moot is open to all law students worldwide and it begins with students competing first at the national or country level. This is the qualifying round. The qualifying round will be followed by the international rounds comprising the preliminary, quarter-final, semi-final, and the final rounds. Different countries will host the Competition annually in successive turns which reflect the different continents of the world.
The national moot competition (the “Competition”) is based on disputes between federating units/states/provinces in a country. Thus, the venue for the Competition’s proceedings is the Supreme Court or the applicable final court of the country where the Competition is taking place. The Competition will commence with preliminary rounds. This will be followed by the quarter, semi, and final rounds. Both the International Law Moot and the Competition will be held annually.
