NCA Academy

NCA” stands for the National Committee on Accreditation which is a sub unit of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada. The main role of the NCA is to assess the legal credentials and professional experience of lawyers who obtained their legal education outside of Canada. Usually, these foreign-trained lawyers are required by the NCA to register for and write some law examinations administered by the NCA itself. Passing the required NCA examinations deems the legal credential and professional experience of the foreign-trained lawyer to be equivalent to a Canadian legal credential for which the NCA issues a Certificate of Qualification to the foreign-trained lawyer. Except for the Barreau du Quebec or the Chambre des notaires du Quebec, most law societies in Canada require this Certificate of Qualification from foreign-trained lawyers for admission to bar purposes and processes.

NCA examinations are self-study exams. This means that foreign-trained lawyers are responsible for obtaining their own course materials and for developing their own course of study. Given the complexity of some common law courses and considering the unique Canadian variation to some of these courses, experience has shown that some foreign-trained lawyers may require assistance with the preparation for the exams. This is where the NCA Academy offers help. NCA exams are written four times in a year, and the NCA Academy offers intensive teaching assistance throughout these periods. The NCA Academy organizes intensive coaching classes for the five compulsory courses which the NCA assesses for most foreign-trained lawyers. The NCA Academy also offers teaching assistance in other courses outside the five compulsory ones.
